Drug trade names include Propecia and Proscar, (the former is marketed for hair loss in male pattern baldness, and the latter for BPH). There is 1 mg of finasteride in Propecia and 5 mg in Proscar. PROPECIA is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss on the vertex and the anterior mid-scalp area. PROPECIA is for use by MEN ONLY and should NOT be used by women or children.

DRUG DESCRIPTION

Finasteride was approved initially in 1992 as Proscar, a treatment for prostate enlargement, but the sponsor had studied 1 mg of finasteride and demonstrated hair growth in male pattern hair loss. PROPECIA reduces DHT, a key cause of hair loss.

No. 6642 - PROPECIA tablets, 1 mg, are tan, octagonal, film-coated convex tablets with "stylized P" logo on one side and PROPECIA on the other. They are supplied as follows: Finasteride is a white crystalline powder with a melting point near 250°C. It is freely soluble in chloroform and in lower alcohol solvents but is practically insoluble in water. PROPECIA tablets for oral administration are film-coated tablets that contain 1 mg of finasteride Propecia prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp. Often, this results in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of the head.

Finpecia contains 1 mg Finasteride the same ingredient as in Propecia. PROPECIA works by blocking the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. This reduces the level of hormone, DHT, in the scalp and allows hairs to revert to a normal growth cycle.
